加拿大饒舌天王德瑞克不斷突破告示牌紀錄，最新專輯《VIEWS》邁向第11週告示牌專輯榜冠軍，是繼泰勒絲神專《1989》後，冠軍週數達到11週的專輯。勢如破竹的他，更獲得6座VMA入圍，以〈Hotline Bling〉入圍「年度音樂錄影帶」、「最佳流行男歌手音樂錄影帶」、「最佳嘻哈音樂錄影帶」、「最佳藝術指導」，以及與女友蕾哈娜合作的〈Work〉共同拿下「最佳流行女歌手音樂錄影帶」和「最佳組合音樂錄影帶」的入圍。
性感小天后亞莉安娜今年5月甫發行新專輯《Dangerous Woman》，就獲得本屆VMA共5項提名，以〈Into You〉獲得「最佳流行女歌手音樂錄影帶」、「最佳流行音樂錄影帶」和「最佳攝影最佳剪輯」提名，而〈Let Me Love You〉則是入圍「最佳組合音樂錄影帶」；蕾哈娜一共入圍4個獎項緊追在後，〈Work〉獲得2項入圍，與凱文哈里斯合作的〈This Is What You Came For〉也獲得2項提名。
